New Client: Tori Praver Swimwear

Hi everyone,

I have some more exciting client news that goes hand in hand with the recent fashion week in NYC. Not only that, this client also ties to the recent release of the 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

Tori Praver Swimwear is the new client I am talking about. Who is Tori Praver? If you answered along the lines of super model, sports illustrated swimsuit model, Guess?, Billabong, fashion designer,…., then my response would be YES, YES, YES, YES, YES and much much more. Tori has made a name for herself over her career and her intelligence and beauty speak for themselves.

After landing this opportunity and doing my research, I quickly gained great respect and admiration for Tori even before our 1st business meeting. As an entrepreneur and business owner myself, there are a million moving pieces that have to be managed in harmony to achieve success. There are also “forever” opportunities that present themselves when your well oiled machine is firing on all cylinders because, you the owner, have the vision plus the brains to act appropriately.

Tori’s beauty got her found. Her confidence, attitude and intelligence made her a known celebrity. Her passion, devotion and recognition of what made Tori – Tori brought her to the realization that her success would lead to greater successes in building her own swimsuit line.

ABOUT THE SHOOT
Fashion designers are tasked each season with releasing their new products to the world. Retail stores and showrooms need a way to view the new product lines and understand available sizes, colors, styles, wholesale pricing, etc. One major vehicle to do this for a designer is what is called a “Look Book”; a catalog if you would of still life and modeled product photography.

I was hired for two unique tasks. The first was to photograph approximately 15 swimsuits on mannequins to display their form in the Look Book. The second was the actual creation of the Spring/Summer 2011 Look Book. This required a mannequin, a chroma blue background, studio product lighting and the use of post production tools (yes Photoshop) to create a “floating” product (aka – removal of the background and mannequin).

Adobe In Design would be used to create the Look Book; making a complete marketing tool and main line of product communication to prospective buyers. All in all, I served the roles of Photographer, Editor, Project Manager, and self proclaimed “Do-It-Aller”. I cannot take full credit – many thanks to John Gentile, my long term business partner / freelancer extraordinaire for his art direction and lead Look Book designer.

This was a fun, interesting project; and one which I took great pleasure in as the value that the end result would provide to Tori Praver Swimwear was a very rewarding experience.

ABOUT THE CLIENT
Tori Praver grew up on the sands of Maui, Hawaii, surfing and swimming in the sun of the tropical island paradise. Her childhood experience led to a life-long love of the beach lifestyle and provided the best background to launch her own swimwear line. Today, a successful swimwear model and designer, she knows just what women want to feel confident and comfortable. She channeled her expertise into an alluring line of separates, one-kinis and cover-ups that will have women strutting down the boardwalk or launching into the waves.

As a model, Praver’s big break came when she was asked to follow in the footsteps of such iconic superstars as Claudia Schiffer and Eva Hertzigova as the face of Guess? She has worked with some of the industry’s most renowned photographers including, Bruce Weber, Patrick Demarchelier, and, Gilles Bensimon. Tori has been featured on the covers and inside pages of top magazines such as, Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, and Glamour among others. She has also appeared three times in the coveted swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated.

Tori’s sophisticated taste and eye for detail has been influenced by the designers with whom she has worked and the many places she has traveled. “I have been blessed to experience so many gorgeous places and have been exposed to so many amazing cultures, I can’t help but be inspired when I travel.” Yet Praver maintains her own simple yet successful philosophy that fuels her eponymous swimwear line, “I decided to create designs that are more democratic in a way – I love when mother and daughter both wear my product. I will appeal to both young girls and more mature women.”

I recently had the amazing opportunity to shoot a live set for an old friend and career rock n’ roller, Michael MacIvor, and his new band, A Family Plot.

MacIvor, formerly of the band Candiria, has stepped up from behind the bass guitar and become lead vocalist. As you will read below, A Family Plot is a different flavor than his past. These guys rock and I can’t help but pick out influences such as Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, and the Police; three of my personal favorites.

ABOUT THE SHOOT: The venue was a New York City spot named Ace of Clubs. We were dealing with an extremely dark room with some white flood lights accompanied by blue- and red-colored fill lights throughout the performance. Given the layout and the lack of usable shooting space, this quickly became a challenging assignment.

The keys here were creativity and drama. One of my main goals was to present and communicate the feeling of movement throughout the riffs, strums, rolls, and beats. Each band member came ready to play with tremendous inspirational chords and key strokes, firing off pure energy.

In order to create the desired effects, decisions were quickly made to shut down the flash, aggressively increase the ISO, and slow down the shutter. To me, this shoot wasn’t really about sharp, crisp environmental portraiture. It was more about motion blurring; intense, dark lighting and shadowing; deliberate grain; wide-angle, full-blown views; close-up instrumental detail; and well-documented rock n’ roll, baby!

I really wanted myself and my viewing audience to get to know the band members: their energy, passion, desire, and ability to deliver their style of musical perfection. I’d say, mission accomplished! These guys had the place going strong, and by the second song, there were moments when my camera trigger was firing in perfect harmony to the beat!

ABOUT A FAMILY PLOT:
After spending nearly 10 years as the bassist for critically-acclaimed jazz/metal fusion band Candiria, Michael MacIvor decided to take the risk of his professional life. “I wanted to do something that nobody would see coming at all. I got myself a guitar and started writing songs and singing,” he says. “What came out couldn’t be any further from what Candiria was.”

In the fall of 2008, MacIvor planted the seeds that would rapidly sprout and become A Family Plot . His intention was to get back to the roots of where he started. Drawing from all of the members’ formative influences, the band would touch upon the classic sounds of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, but also mix in influences such as the Police, Nirvana, and Jane’s Addiction.

“I could have hired any number of well-known musicians for this project, but it was important for me to assemble a band of people I knew well and considered family,” says MacIvor. “The music was so close to me and so personal, I felt I could only really share the experience with people I truly cared about.”

Enter MacIvor’s former Candiria bandmate and long-time songwriting partner John LaMacchia. LaMacchia had been working on super-group Spylacopa and his own record label, Rising Pulse, for some time. But eager to make music with MacIvor again, LaMacchia joined the fold when called upon. Longtime friends Wayne Schneiderman and Joseph Milazzo of art-rock group Black Pig would round out the rhythm section.

A Family Plot has set out with one goal in mind: to make music that is important again. Each member has stated that growing up, the most important thing to them was music. Their mission is to make music that will move people; that is as important to others as the music they listened to was to them.

“Today it seems that a lot of music is just a sidebar to the fashion or the style of the scene, and it’s sad,” MacIvor says. “By no means are we saying that you can’t be into fashion. You can! Just don’t make it more important than the songs.”

A Family Plot released its self-titled independent EP in early October 2009. In the short time since the EP’s release, it’s been getting great feedback. The disc is currently available through Rising Pulse Records and the band’s official website, www.afamilyplot.net. It will also be available worldwide through iTunes by the end of October.
